A hazard communication label has one job: to tell a worker what a chemical is and how it can hurt them before they touch it. Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, a shipped chemical container has to carry six specific pieces of information. That is the whole checklist.

The six elements every shipped chemical label needs
Every shipped chemical container covered by OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom, 29 CFR 1910.1200) must carry six label elements. Miss one, and the label is incomplete.
These come from the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), which OSHA adopted so labels look the same across suppliers and borders.
- Product identifier. The chemical name or number that matches the safety data sheet (SDS). It ties the container back to its full hazard record, so the two never drift apart.
- Signal word. One word that sets the alarm level. "Danger" marks the more severe hazards, and "Warning" marks the less severe ones. A label carries only one signal word, never both.
- Pictogram(s). The red-bordered diamond symbols that show the hazard type at a glance, such as the flame for flammables or the corrosion symbol for corrosives. One chemical can require several.
- Hazard statement(s). Set phrases assigned to each hazard class, like "Causes severe skin burns and eye damage." The wording is fixed by the classification, not written freehand.
- Precautionary statement(s). Plain instructions for handling, storage, response, and disposal, such as "Wear protective gloves" or "Keep away from heat."
- Supplier information. The name, address, and phone number of the manufacturer, importer, or other responsible party.
Get those six on the label, in legible form, and a shipped container meets the core requirement.
Workplace containers follow a shorter rule.
When a worker pours a chemical out of its original drum into a smaller container, that secondary container still needs a label, but the label is shorter. At a minimum, secondary container labels need two things: the product identifier and hazard information, shown through words, pictures, symbols, or a mix.
Many facilities simply copy the full hazard communication labels to stay consistent, which is the safer habit. There is one narrow exemption. A container needs no label only when the chemical is used on the same shift, by the same person who filled it, and stays in that person's control the whole time.
